Did anyone see about the iPhone 4? Personally, I'm more excited about the new iOS! I'm going to upgrade as soon as it comes out. Smile

I'm on the fence with iPhones. I really like them for the usefulness but my job requires strength, something iPhone doesn't handle very well. My coworker has had his 1st gen iPhone for use with his own gutter business and he stopped using it a few weeks ago because it quit receiving calls randomly.

I was reading a news item yesterday on a freebie newspaper on the (very sloooooooooow) London Underground. The rumour that I have yet to find elsewhere was that Apple are finally listening to my comments about putting photovoltaic cells on their gizmos like iPhone to trickle charge them.

Yes, I had that exact thought the other day: if only the iPod could recharge itself using some form of energy freely around:
a.) body heat (from within my pocket)
b.) motion (like a self-winding watch)
c.) solar power

I got a 3G for graduation just before the 3GS came out, but once this contract runs out next year, I'm (hopefully) switching to an Android phone. Am I going to get burned at the stake? Razz

If it's any consolation, my sister decided to upgrade after being stuck with her Samsung dumb phone for almost 3 years. Her boyfriend managed to get a pre-order in the other day.

Just pre ordered my iPhone 4 Smile Going to make the switch July 19th when my Verizon accounts terminate. Being in the south and with the new Wi FI roaming contract AT&T and Verizon signed it makes more sense now to get one.

Apparently, if you hold it in a certain way (the iPhone 4 that is) reception is poor:

http://gizmodo.com/5571171/iphone-4-loses-reception-when-you-hold-it-by-the-antenna-band

Something to do with shorting out metal strips around the outside and (presumably) changing the antenna loading. One wonders about RF burns too.

I saw that yesterday. Kind of disappointed in the fact that I get mine sometime around the 14th of July. Heh that is what you get from deciding to say what the hell lets go for it and get a top of the line phone. Gonk

People initially said "How clever" about the outer metal strip forming the aerial. Maybe not. This is probably why many phones have aerials sticking out of the top to ensure a good dose of RF to the user's brain cell. Oh yes, and to the local repeater tower. It's pretty amazing any of this stuff works with such minimal aerials.

I'm amazed that this problem didn't emerge or was somehow ignored during testing. Apple must do field tests right ? After all they keep losing prototypes in bars. Smile Added to the problems with iPads connecting to WiFi one deduces that Apple need a good RF engineer who understands aerials. And someone who understands that product testing shouldn't just be under the ideal conditions in Apple headquarters.

Yes, but do you really want people to see you in the bath ? Must make lying harder for sales reps too. And those people who make "number withheld" "no message" calls to my answering machine all day. Imagine if I picked up and saw who it was.
Presumably there is a "face withheld" facility in this software too ? Wink

iPhone 4 users turn to nail polish

I'm a little surprised that this solution works, as a misplaced hand will still cause significant capacitive loading at these frequencies.

Of course you could use Apple's "bumpers" which fit around the edge of the phone. But at £29, they are too pricey for many to consider – and have not pleased people who think their phone should work correctly out of the box.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple had included these with the iPhone. I'm guessing that there is only a few pence - ten cents worth of plastic material there. Maybe one of those wide rubber bands that my postman drops everywhere would be a good alternative.

I have it and it is not as bad as the hype plays it. I guess some of its politics and other is bandwagons. Tell you the truth once you put a case on it which you should do anyway its a non issue. I guess it probably has to do with you not making contact with the antenna itself .
I have been using it for the last 3 days and not one drop call and not one degradation of signal due to faulty design. I even called my mom in Asheville and let me tell you with Verizon it drops and yesterday the 20 minutes I was on with her was the first time I had no dead spots or dropped call in many many years.
However I agree without it if you hold it at the base while cupping the left side it does degrade . But really awkward to do. I really had to force myself to hold it that way so it is not really a natural way to hold in the first place for most. its a fun phone much better then my neighbors new droid in many respects. It also helps that all my ipod apps were downloaded to the iPhone.
