Google celebrate their official 10th birthday today with a special logo on their search page:

Some people reckon Google have been around longer than ten years
and other's that September 7th or 15th is the real date. The
domain google.com was registered on September 15th 1998.

However, like the Queen, Google has decided on an official birthday date.

I like Google, but it seems to have so much going on. I mean its not really a search engine anymore. It's becoming like Sun where they are getting into almost anything and could take over the world.

I don't like the way that Google have decided to create data,
particularly where it impacts on individuals. This goes way beyond
cataloging the internet. Sending out mobile cameras to photograph
streets seems very intrusive. I could imagine such data would be of
use to criminals.

It could be, if I look for say my general area of where I live, it shows a picture of my street and my house with my mums car in the driveway. It's very creepy to see it.

I've seen the Google spy-cars out and about near where I live.
I don't know why they make them look so menacing, with a black dalek thingy on top. If they wrapped it in a housing*** it would immediately look better. It only needs the lens peeking out.

What will get very creepy is when Google Search associates a building to individual names, web sites and other records. There are already reverse phone number web sites where you can get personal details and a map with a circle around the location. I never asked anyone to do that with my data, but one isn't given the choice.

On the positive side, iGoogle provides fantastic tools for improving the quality of one's web site, finding dead links etc.

*** Or tinsel for Christmas.
