Activating Web Services
How to Activate Mac GUI web hosting
To setup your free 1GB Mac GUI email account and web hosting, you must first login and access the Preferences page. Then click the Web Services link.

If you are going to use Mac GUI to send and receive email or host a web site, we would like some more information about you. Fill in the requested information, and click the Submit button. Everything will be processed automatically in approximately 45 minutes. To check your status, use the same page. The text will switch from grey 'Inactive', to blue 'Processing', and finally to green 'Active'.

As soon as your email and web hosting are ready, you will be sent an email.

Using FTP
What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is essentially a part of the Internet that allows you to upload and download files to remote web servers very quickly. Note that it does NOT use or involve a web browser!

I can't access my Web Disk!
If you've followed the instructions, perhaps you haven't activated your Mac GUI Web Services. Go to the Preferences page and make sure that the Status is green Active. If not, you may need to fill in some more details.

It could also be that Mac GUI FTP is very busy, so you'll have to try again later. Or you could be entering the wrong username or password.

iCal Hosting
How to host iCal calendars
Mac GUI allows both public and private iCal hosting (iCal is Apple's calendar application). If you want to host your calendar on your Mac GUI Web Disk, you need to download iCal for Mac GUI.

All of the information you will need to install and set it up is provided with the download file.

Posting files or web pages
How do I post a file or web page?
You must first make sure that you have activated your Mac GUI Web Services. You must use FTP to upload the files to the server. See the "Using FTP" help article for further details.

Also, the very first file must be named index.htm or index.html

How much disk space and bandwidth do I get?
Everyone is allowed 200 MB of web disk space with which to upload his or her files or web pages. Bandwidth (how much data is transferred from the web server to each person) is not set to any limit. However, if your monthly bandwidth usage spikes up during the month, we may check into or disable your web space.

What kinds of files aren't allowed?
You can't use Mac GUI to distribute unauthorized copies of copyrighted material, including photographs, artwork, text, recordings, designs, or computer programs.

Viewing your Web site
How can people access my site?
Anything that you upload to your Mac GUI Web Disk is accessible at http://your_username.macgui.com

I keep getting a 404 error!
This may be because the Mac GUI Web Disk is cAsE-seNsitIVe. In the future, make sure the filenames you use are all lower-case. Also, files starting with a period as well as filenames with a space are not allowed.
What is error 403 'Forbidden'?
This error occurs from one of two reasons: 1.) You do not have permission to view that web page, or 2.) You are trying to access a directory which doesn't contain an index.html file.

Will there be any advertisements on my web site?
No. Mac GUI City does not impose advertising upon anyone's web site.
