The App Store, first introduced in 2008, has reached a big milestone: the 50 billionth download. Apple had started a countdown to the 50 billion mark about two weeks ago. The winner of the contest will receive a $10,000 Apple gift card.

The App store took nearly 4 years to reach the 25 billion mark. Apple currently receives about 20 billion App downloads per year, or about 50 million every day.

About 14 hours ago, midnight my time, I received an automated email stating that Mac GUI was about to exceed its bandwidth quota. Twelve hours ago, at 2 AM my time, Mac GUI exceeded its bandwidth quota and went offline.

The culprit? One of the Mac GUI sites that I host for free, http://basalgangster.macgui.com. It's a great site full of in-depth and fascinating articles about early Macintosh history, and I'm glad that I host it. One article was mentioned on reddit.com and in the span of just a few hours, over 9,000 visitors came to take a look.

Obviously, we're online now! I talked with my ISP to get an increase in our monthly bandwidth quota, so we shouldn't have too many more surprises like that for quite some time!

I am glad to announce that Mac GUI now supports additional account security using 2-Factor Authentication, sometimes also referred to as Secondary Authentication (the latter is what it's called here) using the Google Authenticator app for mobile devices.

Enabling this feature for your Mac GUI account will improve security by requiring a unique 6-digit token be entered upon every log in. The token changes with the passage of time and should only be known by you.

For more information, including instructions on how to enable this feature, visit this page.
Here it is, nine years of the peanut butter and jelly site, Mac GUI!

Take a look back to the remotest antiquity, and see the original HTML files of Mac GUI.

What has happened in the past year? Well we've seen enhancements to the Usenet archive; a new search engine and better newsgroup subscriptions. A2HQ.com, the Apple II webhosting platform, was welcomed by several Apple II users. Oh, and I wrote a book!

Looking back at my to-do list from last year, it looks like I was successful in 3 out of the 5 items. Not too bad!

I also reached the goal of having 10,000 unique visitors in a month. That was achieved a few months ago in September. The upward trend of visitors is still with us; last month Mac GUI received over 12,000 unique visitors.

Last year, Mac GUI served 1 million page views, which is something that we've never done before. That's quite a mark.

One interesting change in traffic is that the Usenet archives have now consistently outranked the Downloads area in terms of popularity. Last year, there were 201,019 page views in Usenet, and only 188,252 page views for the Downloads. This change is probably due to the fact that more and more google searches are returning hits in the Usenet archive.

I think we can make it to 10 years, don't you?
